Just wanted to vent. Had a laptop crash the other day and I've been work'n on it for the last couple of days. At first the hard drive was thought the be the culprit because doing a scan on it revealed a bad block. That would explain some of the read/write errors I was seeing when trying to boot into it. Well since I was confident it was the hard drive I went and ordered a new one. 160Gb to replace the 60Gb which was pretty darn full anyways. So out goes the old, in with the new. I'm think'n from here it should be smooth sailing. WRONG.. When tryng to reinstall Windows I kept getting "Setup can not copy xxx.xxx files!" I'm like, HUHH?? What the heck is going on? I'm think'n maybe the CD is bad, or maybe the new hard drive is bad. Well after trying everything and start to think maybe the DVD drive is bad. Well I decide to just skip the files that could not be copied and see how far I get. Well after skipping a few files the system would give me a Blue Screen of Death! This is not even in Windows, its in the setup screen! And now I can't even get the computer to boot into Windows Setup. This is really starting to tick me off now but the BSOD gave me a hint. I decided to take out a stick of ram. When I first bought the laptop I had bought a 1Gb stick of Corsair ValueRam to add to the 256mb it came with. Well as soon as I take that stick out and try to reinstall, guess what.. It works. I was able to install with no copying errors. Nothing in any of the error messages or logs indicated a ram issue. It was very frustrating. Ohwell I'm in the middle of installing Service Pack 3 because I don't want to mess with the individual updates since SP2. I'll have to try to find some more ram and hopefully this Laptop will last another couple years. Overall it has been a good laptop.

Just my rant of the day...

That's what was wrong? Sheesh, what a pain.

Yeah computers can be a pain sometimes. At least you figured out what it was in the end.

Looks like you have a spare notebook hard drive now, what you going to do with it? 256Mb isn't much, your wife is going to wonder why it runs slower than before.

It actually is running faster now than it did before. I'm think'n the ram was having issues for a while and just finally gave out. Usually with ram it is either working or its not.

I got the same brand notebook he has too, I haven't had any issues with it. Toshiba on the other hand, a coworker friend has had nothing but problems with his.
I have 2 Toshiba laptops, one of them is over 3yrs. old and all I've done to it is change the ram from 256mb to 2gb of ram. The other one has 3gb of ram, trying to upgrade to 4gb, but as far as problems, none to bad to deserve a gripe.

The other day I spilled a FULL Jack and Coke on my HP laptop...
Took it apart, cleaned/dried it out and works just fine...
Also was able to fix the non-working volume button that I had.

HP ever since I can remember. This is my 3rd computer & my 1st notebook. Came with 4gb of ram & 250gig hard drive.
No problems out of it so far & had for about a year. I can't drop the money on an apple, but IMO this is the next best thing.
I do keep getting notices about a recall on the battery, suppose I should check & see if mine qualifies, then send it in if it does B4 it catches fire & burns the house down LoL.

or not bought cheap ram ... then people wonder why they get boners from buying expensive Apples which use quality parts
Apple and quality should NOT go hand in hand. Apple's first run products are usually so buggy that there's been an Apple Product Cycle joke out for years now

The Apple Product Cycle : "The obligatory “I’m waiting for Rev. B” discussion appears in the Mac forums. People who’ve been burned by first-generation Apple products open up their old wounds and bleed their tales of woe. Unsympathetic technophiles fire back with, “if you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen. pussy.” Everyone has this stupid argument for the twenty-third time."

I used to do tech support for a school district that used 90% Macs. Trust me, the only thing they have up on PC's is the lack of spyware/malware. BUT there are some trojans floating around on Macs so even they aren't immune. Especially now that Apple just uses X86 and parts made by Foxconn, who BTW, makes parts for Dell as well.

Please dont' buy into the "Apple is quality since it costs more".

I didn't know about the battery recall... I should check into that as well... HP's do run pretty hot, but that's all the trouble I've had so far.

Well, I've received an email from HP & Office Depot regarding the Recall. My model # qualifies, but I have yet ot remove the battery to see if it is the one being recalled. I'm always in need of my computer & have a hard time parting with the battery...LoL

If you want, I will forward the email to your email address, if you will just pm me with it.
