Yeah, but you're forgetting something... Gas was well over $4/gallon when the Genesis sedan came out, and despite the fact that it had an available V8, it has still sold well.

People see a bargain of a car, and with the 10/100 warranty, they know that repairs will be covered. Many people consider it a wise economic choice even in these times. Besides, the kind of people who will seriously be in the market for this car aren't swayed by the economy.

There's no way Hyundai is going to cancel the debut of this car in the US. The US version has been in production since the beginning of December, and the Koreans aren't going to be willing to lose money by simply storing the cars until they get an order for them. As Hyundai always does with new models, they will start out by shipping one or two to select dealerships, and it will go from there. The dealerships that sell the ones they get will get more. The ones that don't (or can't) sell them won't get very many. We initially only got a couple Genesis sedans when they came out, and sold them pretty quick. Over the next few weeks we got about 5 more, and ended up with 9 or 10 total. I believe that we have sold them all except for two. It's simply supply and demand.

I am starting to wonder if the Coupe is still going to be coming here. I guess they can ship some and see how it sells. It may not be the best time to be selling RWD performance coupes.
Have faith my friend, the Coupe will come, even if I have to go over to Korea myself and steal them. :) Kidding aside, Hyundai has put way too much hype into this car for them not to bring the car over here. They are very aware of the enthusiast following of the car right now and it's only going to grow. In my opinion it will surpass cars like the WRX, EVO, and SRT-4 because of the pricepoint and the platform and because so many aftermarket companies and tuners are wanting to work with this one car together at the same time.

Well news came out the last few days that Hyundai is cutting production at there plants in Korea 30%. So they will probably sell the coupe but it might be in limited availability. Which if its in high demand might drive the prices up if the car is hard to come by.

They may cut overall production but not necessarily the Coupe if it sells well. They will probably cut production on the cars that they are seeing less demand for, like the SUVs. For example in the US the Tuscon only sold ~19,000 units in 2008 where in 2007 they sold over 41,000 units about a 45% decrease. The coupe has done well in Korea, I read on the Hyundai-blog that they had over 1,029 orders the first day. Their goal was to sell 2,500 by the end of year. So I think if the Coupe does as well as I think it will Hyundai will produce more Coupes. Actually I just found an article where Hyundai does plan to increase their overseas sales, hopefully this means the Coupe too:

S Korea's Hyundai, Kia Motor to increase overseas car sales in 2009 _English_Xinhua

We're just going to have to wait and see what happens.

Well, I think that Hyundai ought to keep the one ad with Rhys driving at the Atlanta Speedway to promote & at least get the word out to the avg American that the GenCoupe has landed. They can still use the other ad to let folks know that we're in this together & run the economic ad campaign. Why not both, too many people are expecting the coupe ad, they can't let us down.

I hope & pray that Hyundai is not foolish enough to cut production on a car that they have yet to see sales figures on here in the states. If they are cutting production, I would have to agree with sabbasaun, & say that it would be on vehicles that they already have seen a decline on.

One of the biggest things this car has going for it is it's price point. If limited #s cause price to go up enough, why not go ahead & opt for the more established prestigous sport brands & get a 370Z or G37. If they want to sell this car, the base 2.0t needs to start below 20 grand & the 3.8 need to start below 25 grand. Loaded out, no GenCoupe should break 30 grand. If they stick to those prices, IMO they'll be ok.
