FWIW I have used some '100w" hi beams. They are really 70W actual current draw. Work better than the 55w and no overheating problems. You can also get some back up lamps that are a couple watts brighter (18w vs 16w OEM) at the hardware store in the outside lighting yard light section.

I also see they make fog lamps that are a direct fit that are higher wattage. PGJ13 base same as the 881, 27w. 886 50w, 889 27w, 894 38w, 896 38w, 898 38w.

By the way, I used your chart and purchased some replacement bulbs for my Gen Coupe. My coupe did have the 1156 bulb. I didn't check before attempting to replace them. The connecting tabs are different and I had to slightly force the replacements so they would fit. They are working though. Maybe the cars in the 'States' have different bulbs.

Yes, the 3.8 GT & both Track models use Xenon HID bulb D1S.

So, as a complete n00b to this, how exactly does one go about looking for replacements? Do you walk into an auto parts store and ask for the model(s) listed in the OP, or do the models change with bulb make? What are some good, commonly-available brands?

In particular, I would really like to find a higher wattage (brighter) replacement for my GC's high beams. They don't seem very good at all, especially on these really dark winter nights.

Bulb sizes are the same regardless of the company - the only thing they might do is add suffix letters like if you had a bulb that was 921 in size ... you might find 921ST where the ST is some tweak that particular bulb has from whatever the company is (specifically I think ST means Silverstar if I remember right). If you go to a local auto part store they will not have much of anything better than Sylvania Silverstars which are not half bad but they are halogen - they have been good to me for years. They have very bright white light and I had a set of Silverstar headlights last over 5 years in my truck that I drove daily. If you want LED bulbs the best you will likely find at one of those stores as far as brand is APC. You can find better LEDs from sites online but I would first look at vids of how other cars with the same model bulbs work and how the bulbs look - there are many videos out there. Diode Dynamics is having a sale on the 27th for one day and the prices are good, but, as I said try to find some video examples of the exact types/styles you're thinking of buying.

I have not confirmed any of these bulbs yet personally, since I copied this list from somewhere else. I would recommend double checking prior to purchase.

If anyone's having a hard time finding replacement bulbs, we just started carrying Halo Lights. They're Japanese made HID, Halogen and LED bulbs, they pull the stock wattage, but their manufacturing technology makes them produce more light with that stock wattage, so, for example, a 55w bulb produces a light equivalent of an 85w bulb. They are more expensive than what you'll find at your local parts store, but that's due to the manufacturing process that makes them perform better. They come in some pretty sweet colors. Sounds like its likely just a connector mod and not in the housing. Possibly just modding the plastic and not the connector electrodes. Moe with Halo confirmed for me that the mod is really that easy.

Either, but yellow tint looks best IMO out of ways to do yellow fogs.
