Sources from Hyundai indicates that the 2010 Genesis Sedan will come available with an 8-speed transmission in the V8. It will be a Hyundai built transmission and forgo the ZF 6-speed currently used in the V8. The goal will be to decrease fuel consumption by keeping the engine in the optimum power band for all driving conditions. It will also help the Genesis validate that it is a serious alternative to the other luxury cars that the Genesis competes with. This all coming in at significantly less than the BMW 7 series or Lexus.

WTF?? Whats next 10 speed transmission? This is doing nothing but increase the weight of the car, more expensive, an high maintenance failure, and shifting every second. I would hate to have these rally styled gear ratios in my car, except in a subbie, or evo which they were made for. Yea more gears = better mileage, but weight is the key here. Gears don't really do much in fuel economy to me, the weight does... Just my opinion...

I agree with you somewhat, hopefully the car does not gain a bunch of weight but I hear that an 8 speed transmission will be almost as smooth as one equipped with CVT. I guess we'll see what happens in the long run but Hyundai felt the need to do this to keep up with the competition.

I read that the new ZF 6sp weighs something like 15% less than the previous 5sp, yet has much quicker shifts & is stronger, so isn't it plausable that the new 8sp could be made of lighter yet more sound materials & possibly perform better at the same time? I personally don't think I need 8 gears unless driving a semi, but I'll let them research & develope it, then maybe there will be some benefit for me from all the work they put into it. Just glad to see that Hyundai is willing to take chances to improve.

Genesis sedan with 8 speed transmission?

Hyundai Genesis sedan : With 8-speed transmission?
December 23, 2008

Hyundai is making a serious run at such stalwart luxury marques as Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW with the Genesis sedan. The Korean automaker is already competing directly with those established players using its current range of engines and transmissions, with the 4.6-liter V8 being mated to the same 6-speed ZF automatic tranny that sees duty in various Bimmers and Jaguars. Sometime around 2010, Hyundai will have a new 8-speed automatic ready for public consumption that being developing in-house, and it will surely see the light of day in the Genesis mated up to Hyundai’s latest V8 engine.

That development will trump Mercedes by one gear and match the number of ratios offered by Lexus. BMW is expected to rely on a new unit from ZF, its longtime supplier, which should also feature eight forward gears.

In the never-ending quest for increased performance and fuel efficiency, plus a bit of one-upmanship, expect more automakers to pair their largest power plants with an ever-increasing number of cogs. The car market keeps on rolling; it is really becoming a tough choice for a test drive. While Porsche reportedly mulls the idea of a four-cylinder Boxster and Audi offers a TDI version of its iconic TT, and Mercedes-Benz will offer a diesel engine in its next-generation SLK.
