Hyundai Plans Premium Division, Rival For Infiniti And Lexus0October 20th, 2010

Hyundai wants a premium brand, capable of attracting the European customers and steal some of Infiniti’s and Lexus’ customers. The first model of the Koreans might be the Hyundai Genesis coupe.

The success the Japanese rivals at Nissan and Toyota enjoy with their luxury divisions made a lot of automakers jealous, but also meant a new challenge for the other car builders in the premium segment. Now, it seems that Hyundai wants to launch a luxury division to rival Infiniti and Lexus, and the first step in this direction might be made in the next three years.

The Asian conglomerate wants a premium brand, capable of fighting the Japanese and bring a new range of models on the market. According to the first information, Hyundai plans to use the new division to launch the Genesis coupe on the Great Britain market and then all-over Europe.

The sporty model will test the public’s reaction on the Old Continent to the idea of a Korean luxury brand, preparing the field for other two important models. If the welcoming is warm, we could be able to see in the Hyundai premium range a mid-size sedan and also a full-size luxury car which will be the flag ship of the line-up, positioned in Lexus LS’ segment.

If everything goes as planned we would be able to see first premium South Korean cars on the European roads in 2013.

A little surprised that Hyundai has decided to use the coupe over the sedan as the test model. Maybe the price has something to do with it. I hope Hyundai redesigns the interior if they really want to compete. I know I harp on this subject a lot but it's just that I am so disappointed with this particular aspect of the car.

Yeah, this is a suprise to me as well, so I don't know how much credability I put into this article. I would of thought the Genesis sedan & Equus would lead the way with the GenCoupe & Veracruz to follow. But, I suppose that the European markets are more into fuel economy & are not biased toward larger autos like us Americans are. Therefore the 2.0t GenCoupe would make sense I suppose. I'm waiting for Hyundai to develope a smaller Genesis sedan based off of the coupe.

when the Genesis Sedan and Coupe came out, weren't they pretty adamant about NOT going to do the secondary "brand" of cars. Or am I just remembering incorrectly (which tends to be the case, 100% of the time. =P )?

I remember the same. Something about it costing like $1 Billion to start a new brand. Perhaps with the loads of cash they've saved up from the Sedan, Coupe, and Sonata they're feeling a little more bold.

Only thing I don't like about this is that if it's a success, we're going to get charged more for the same car down th line

As long as they up the quality of materials and quality control I wouldn't mind paying a bit more though.

This ^^^ they are getting a little more bold & probably feel that with their "new" image, the Genesis line would sell alot more if they were their own division. Either way, I don't seeing it taking effect for several years.

+1..... on if Hyundai developes a new l high end line, the price for the same car we are currently driving will increase between 15-25%, but I would suspect that fit, finish & quality of materials will jump that much as well.

I think they would still make a cheaper version and a luxury more expensive version. Similar to 370z and G cars.
