I have a guitar...

A few years after my grandfather died, my grandma was going to sell his guitar, so I told her that I wanted it and would learn how to play.
It's been 2 years now, and I am still hopeless haha, I just think that I may not have a musical bone in my body.
The guitar is pretty special though, it is a mint condition Takamini bought new the same year that I was born. He had spent some time in an institution due to depression and so the guitar was something to keep him occupied and something he enjoyed while he was there.

But I've always wanted to be able to teach myself to play it (as he taught himself), but it didn't go very well and now it just sits in the corner of my room.

I think it's cool you kept his guitar, sort of a memento.. How were you teaching yourself? Reading books or watching video? Everyone learns in different ways and obviously some people are better at it then others but I need to have that visual to learn anything.. I bought my daughter a Banjo on a recent trip to Hawaii but I decided to teach myself how to play it.. there are a lot of useful vids out there, especially on Youtube that help out..

I was trying to use mostly book, but the problem was that I couldn't even tune the guitar properly. I had all sorts of tuners that I tried and then a friend of mine came over and picked it up and was like "what have you done to this poor thing!?!?!" He tuned it for me, and now when he comes over is pretty much the only time it gets picked up.

I should really try out some videos and see if that works any better for me, as I would really love to be able to do the guitar justice and play it...properly.
