This thread aged well, more than 12 years... I've never perceived a condescension even though american football never really made it here in Canada. I also don't think america will stop calling it football and soccer however this World Cup I noticed that US media was using this approach to americans saying "my soccer team, your soccer team, OUR soccer team, it doesn't really matter, just support it" and by that they meant to integrate Latin-American 1st and 2nd generations to get them behind USA soccer team. As far as I could read and see, it did a really good work and more people were in fact supporting USA soccer team. Personally, I wouldn't mid leaving football and soccer terms as they are, the important thing is the sport per se and not its name
