My Review of Nitto NT05s

Alright, I've had the Nittos on for over a week now in all driving conditions & I feel I can give a fair review.

At first I was a little disappointed at the amount of slip from a dead stop, but then I realized I was just expecting too much initially from these tires. Only a slick could keep from slipping with the amount of torque my car puts down. Tire spin due to acceleration from a stop dropped by about 33%, which is rather good. WIth a 10mph roll out, I can't get the tires to spin what-so-ever, which is really good compared to the Michelins.

Cornering is phenominal due to the rigid side walls these tires have, but suprisingly they ride is just as smooth as my Michelins. I was actually especting a harsher ride due to the stiffened side walls & harder block tread. You do however hear a little more road noise (not tire noise) from cement style highways that are jointed when passing over the joints. Paved roads on the other hand, are quiet. The only time the tires are noisey is when they break loose in cornering or on initial acceleration they givie out a squeal.

The final test, the rain. This is where I was worried the most, but was happily suprised to find that these tires performed just like the reviews said they would. It has been raining off & on over the past week, but this morning there was a down pour. First let me say IMO that the Michelin Pilot Sports are the bench mark for performance tires that also perform in the rain. So I wasn't expecting that kind of performance from the Nittos, but hoping for something decent & what I got was a suprise. I could drive with confidence up to about 90mph in serious rain with the Michelins & this morning I was able to roll out at about 75mph still feeling safe on the NT05s. I even stomped the gas one time at about 60mph to allow the rear end to step out a little & regained traction with no problem (note: I did have TCS on).

So, I give the tires a big 2 thumbs up :bigthumb:

At $525 shipped (235/40ZR17, 255/40ZR17), you can't beat the price. Mind you that is not a discount price only I can get, but the same price anyone can get.
I've already price shopped & here is the link to where I got my tires: TireTeam

nice review a friend of mine told me about theses tires. he had them on his mustang. I guess when i wear my brigdestone tires out i will think about these.

I hear they they can only reduce tire spin by 31.75%, you may want to recalculate.

Also, I'm not sure how many miles you have on your tires but it will take 2-300 before they start feeling good, before then they will have a "greasy" feel being that they are new tires. Just give them a little time and I think you will notice a significant improvement in traction. That's a common problem with guys who track new street tires (not R compound).

Yeah the butt dyno wheel spin checker needs to be recalibrated....

I did however notice an improvement as the tires got some additional miles on them from the trip up north this weekend.

Good wright up....I always thought about picking these up. Kepp us updated down the road on wear and tear.

Will do......

BTW the Michelins were actually missing chunks out of the tread when I removed them due to my aggressive driving. The huge blocks on these tires should hold up much better...LoL

Nice review. Glad you are happy with them.

I thank you for giving me the lead on them. If hadn't been for all the rave reviews, I would not have chose them.

We will see how they hold up with some mileage.
Update on Nitto NT05s.

Alright, I've had these tires on the bimmer for over a month now with almost 2,000 miles traveled. Let me 1st state that after the break-in period, these tires really stick to the road. WOT from 10mph roll has no loss of traction what-so-ever. Dead stop take offs still spin, but only a little, unless cornering & accelerating hard. Normal cornering, even at high speeds upwards of 100mph is smooth & confident. Can't wait to get my new suspension installed...Yippeee....When the tires do break loose, they are quiet on the road. I heard that they will get noisey on the track, but you want to know when you are pushing it to the limit during track days.

As for wear, they show 6/32 of tread wear left & they started with 7.2/32 of tread. Simple arithmetic tells us that I have used 17% of the original tread the tires came with. So, that is about 1/6 of tread use in 2k miles. Therefore, I can expect about 12k total miles out of these tires. B4 you shout damn that sucks, keep in mind that I drive VERY agressively & the avg driver could expect a little more, closer to 15k per the life of the tires. So, once a year a new set will have to be installed. I was going through the Michelins about every 15k miles, but they started with 10/32 of tread life vs the 7.2.

Wet weather driving has suprised me riding on these tires. The NT05s do very well in the rain considering the category of tire they fall in. In terrential down pours I have been able to keep a steady speed of 65mph on the highway, unable to see good enough to go any faster. They are not as good as the Micelins by no means, but still very capable all the same. Then again the Michelins are rated #1 against all others in same category for all weather performance. Good enough for me since I will give a little on the wet road driving if I can push a little more during the dry days.

The tires hook so good, I got a suprise yesterday. I pulled out of the post office drive onto a rather busy 2 lane street. The traffic I was merging with on the far lane was a little ways off, but the nearer lane that was going the opposite direction that I intended to go had a white minivan in it that I had overlooked. I had to accelerate hard after pulling out turning into traffic & got a suprise when I drifted the rear end around (which I've done many times & know how it will react), the tires hooked so good as I was counter steering, the car fish-tailed the opposite direction snatching be back around & yep I over compensated again on my counter steer chirping the tires yet again in the opposite direction. By the 4th waggle of the rear of the vehicle, I was pretty straight but a little suprised. I suppose I could of let off the gas, but what fun is that?

Now for the suprise. Even though I am happy with these tires, I'm going to try another tire on the GenCoupe initially. It is in the same category as the NT05s & a direct competitor, the Hancook RS3 will be my test tire for my R-Spec, running 245/40ZR18 (F) & 285/35ZR18 (R).
