Initial review of Turn In Concepts Short Throw Shifter

After installation, I test drove the vehicle & returned with video footage of the TIC shifter installed. Then I went to Block Buster to exchange some movies last night & drove to work this morning. The TiC shifter has about a 30% reduction in throw & is MUCH more precise feeling through the gate than the stock unit. This improvement felt about as good as I remember the front shifter bushings did after their installation. But like the front shifter bushings, there is more feed back through gear shifter after doing this mod & it has a more notchy feel now. But thats not a bad thing, since it really lets you know for certain when you are completely in gear. I've been spending time at the track during the last 6 months & have noticed most racing shifters have this same characteristic with some you can actually hear the shifter going into gears. Should have no more problems with missing a gear....

As for the install, just follow the TiC directions for the front shifter bushing replacement. First remove the center piece of exhaust & set it aside,

Then drop the front of the exhaust down after pulling it loose from the hanger. You should now have enough clearance to easily remove the heat shield. Once you pull the heat shield out, drop down the front of the drive shaft so you can access the shifter.

You don't have to remove the entire shifter assy like when replacing the front shifter bushings. Instead just remove the rubber boot covering the under side of the actual shifter.

There will be two 8mm bolts holding a metal ring in place that keeps the shifter in the proper position. Once these two bolts & the metal ring are removed, you will need to work the shifter loose so it will slide out. Once it is out, remove the plastic gurdle that encases the white pivot ball of the stock shifter. You will need to install this on the TiC unit when going back together.

So, in your opinion is this a go? If so I have 90+ levers here that I can get set up with a intro buy today.
Id' say it's a go....Lets GITRDONE!!

I say throw down an introductory price & let 'em fly. At the price point you mentioned to me, it'll murder the TWM offering.

I will say that I would have preferred a little more height & the shifter moved more to the left. But, I realize that this is a personal preferrence & most may not agree. In fact TWM markets their shifter as being over an inch shorter than stock & they use this as a selling point, so maybe folks prefer a shifter with shorter height :dunno: As far as moving it over more toward the driver, this may not even be an option, as it may cause rubbing with the unibody or other components. Anywho, TWM has a shifter extention that I could pick up & install on track days.

The only things that I've noticed thus far with this shifter (doesn't really bother me much) that may cause concern are: 1) shifter rattle at idle under load (i.e A/C on). Note: I didn't have the "rattle issue" from the stock unit that people have complained about in the warranty section. 2) If you leave your hand on the sifter while driving, you may pick up a droning noise. I know proper driving dictates that you do not leave your hand on the shifter & rather have both hands on the wheel, except when shifting, but I suspect many do leave their hand on the shifter & this should be noted. I wasn't going to mention these 2 concerns until I had a chance to double check my installation to confirm the problem didn't lie with the install. I will update once I have a chance to recheck my work.

WOW Still running stock exhaust?
Yeah, was waiting on ARK to release their single exit & offer Semi-Sponsorship. Now scratching up money to get 'er done. Trying not to increase power at this point though...

whoaaaa TiC is back? haven't heard any news from them for a year... at least, as far as the GC goes.

Yeah - that's our fault. We were trying to do too many things at once and the R&D over the long term was killing us as we weren't seeing any ROI on the R&D as we kept doing one proto after another with the various parts.

So, what we have done is take a step back, and do one at a time with the success of each determining if we continue with the R&D of the next. In other words, move back to taking baby steps, get one done and released and then move on to the next project.

This way we can get one done and out instead of running around in circles moving from one project to the next.

I have kid duty tonight so I'm out of here for now. Once I get him to bed I will come back into the shop and get these up on the site with the 2 week intro price.
Ok - they are up in our for sale area.
Update on TiC shift lever;

I've been driving using this shifter now for over a week & I am still very impressed. I could not go back to using the stock shifter after having gotten used to this one. In fact I have the stocker on ebay for sale as I'm typing this. If you want a precise short throw shifter that lets you know by feel & sound that you are in gear, you will be interested in taking advantage of the excellent value this shifter provides.

Not to mention it is at a 20% discount for another week.

I just got my install done on the lever and front shifter bushings. All I can say is wow. 6 hour install time by hand and just putting the car on jack stands. If you have access to a lift, this will make the install ten times easier and will probably cut my install time to only an hour or two. I had no leverage to work with, under there and the OEM bolts on the middle pipe for the exhaust and drive-shaft were extremely TIGHT. A lift for greater leverage or some power tools would have helped greatly on those initial bolts.

The only issue I had with the install, was the pin that went through the bottom of the new lever would not fit. The copper ring was too small on the inside. I had to open it up a little bit, no biggie there. Set me back a good hour though. After that issue, I ran into no problems.

I've only driven about maybe 40 minutes on it and it was on the highway, so I didn't have much time to play around with it. It is a bit noisier and a LOT stiffer. I can find every gear easily and I'm actually having to adjust the way I shift because it is so short now. I'm loving it so far. My TiC Knob should be in by monday, and I can only assume that shifting will get even better. It is a bit noisier, but that's alright. Although I'm getting some more noticeable noises in 2nd and 4th gear, but I believe Tufast mentioned this in his review. Sp no foul there either. Definite buy guys!

^^^Shadouwynd, I moved you post for ya. Somehow it was it the post your pics thread.

Anyhow, I chose to do my TiC shift lever swap just using 2 jack stands & the floor jack this time as you can see by my photos. My employer is starting to give me a hard time about working on my car at work & I wanted to see how difficult it would be at the house. Its been a while since I've done any work w/o a lift, although I still have kneumatic tools to use on some of those harder bolts in the exhaust you spoke of. Also a nice large pull bar is always an asset. Doing this at home took about an hour total this last time, but I have a pretty decent mechanical background, have had my shifter out before, have power tools & pull bars etc at my side.

The shifter will smooth out the more you use it & yes you have to get used to shifting again, because it feels completely different. I agree it is noisier & feels stiffer, but not really harder to engage if that makes sense. I'll put it this way, I can shift with just 1 or 2 fingers on most shifts with very little effort. I may post a video showing this, because my original vids have my hand under the knob to show the distance of throw before & after short throw shifter installation.

Thanks for your review

Thanks for that, my computer was acting crazy at the time, it kept pulling random threads. Yes, I ahve noticed it's been getting gradually smoother as I have been using it.
