It sucks!!!!

For all the hype Hyundai has put up for the smoothness of the transmission, it sure is clunky. They talk about triple cone synchros in 1, 2 and 3...hmmm....not working too well.

First is difficult to engage while moving even very slowly. You really have to jam it into first or rev match and double clutch it perfectly to get it to drop in. When stopped, at a light for example, with the car in neutral and the clutch out, then pushing in the clutch and shifting to first you can feel the drivetrain thump. The gears in the trans are moving when in nuetral and the clutch out. When the clutch is pushed in and first gear engaged, the synchros have to match the gear to the selector shaft so that the gear engages smoothly. Otherwise you get a thump or worse, a gear grind. I have only had it grind going into first from a stop once or twice, but it thumps every damn time unless I push in the clutch and wait a couple seconds before engaging first.

Second and third are also issue gears. Second is very clunking/chunky when cold and not a whole lot better when warm. Third is better than second, but not by much. This change in feeling as the car warms got me thinking about changing the trans fluid.

As some of you know, we are avid Subaru fans. In our hunt for the best trans fluid for subaru transmissions, our search led us to Motul Gear 300. We have consistantly found this fluid to provide smoother gear changes and longer trans life over our years of use. Due to our belief in the fluid, we stock a metric **** ton of the stuff. (just ordered 15 more cases yesterday) We figured we'd drain the stock fluid and dump a couple quarts in.

Low and behold, it worked! After a few days of driving the car shifting began to smooth out. No longer does the car clunk when shifting into first gear from a stop. Second and third gears are also easier to engage when cold and when warm. I'm loving the new feeling and no longer feel like the trans is going to break everytime I shift.

Oh yeah, we also have started testing our new shifter bushings. More on this later.

brought this over from gencoupe, I think Tony forgot to post over here & I believe it's a worthwhile read...

Can you link to a vendor for the one you used and provide us with the amount to be purchased to suffice for a drain / fill. :groupbow:

Since no vendor presently on this site offers fluids to my knowledge, it would not be in direct competition if there was a link to fluid offerings out there. If there is a vendor on this site that does offer fluids, please let me know. I picked my Redline fluid for my bimmer up through EAS (European Auto Source) for my rear differential, . I also got my Motul DOT4 brake fluid from the same place. All you have to do is look in the owners manual to what weight fluid is called for & do a search.
