As soon as the warmer weather comes around, I've got three quarts of this that I'll be giving a try. Amsoil also has a nice pump that makes it easy to fill.

I'll report on my results when I get it changed.
Let us know how it goes, I'm going with 3qts of the RedLine MTL90

Wow...

What is the average life (in miles) for the clutch? and how much is a clutch job usually at the dealer?
Truely depends on your driving habits. I've seen people wear them out in under 10k & others make them last over 120k. The DMF design life seems to usually be shorter on avg than that of SMF & if there is any scarring on the flywheel, it is nearly impossible to resurface it properly. With the prices of the parts, I would not even contemplate getting it done at the dealer & if you decide to do so, please come see me...I could use the extra cash.

My recommendation when your clutch wears out is to pick a used stock one up from someone with low miles on theirs, like me or Geoman OR go aftermarket & switch to SMF at the same time.

its been 2 weeks now with new tranny i have no moe grinding in 5th gear but 1st and 2nd are still though to engage when cold but no grinding by the way. but now sometimes when i engage 1st gear at a complete stop i feel the car wanted to move a little ,,, i made a report at my dealer and called hyundaicanada and at first with the tranny problem they were pretty gentil with me but since they change that trnny and now with still same problem now there telling me that the problem of 1st gear should go away when the weather gets higher ,,,,, da i know that but it will come back next winter so that not a good answer for me and now since i started speaking about the clutch now im getting no more answer,,,,, theres a guy on gencoupe.com who had a diangostic on the flywheel making a problem of clutch where that flywheel made damage to the clutch and hyundaicananda and the dealer had him pay like 1000.00 $ to repare that clutch ,,,since its the flywheel made that damage should of been on warranty so him thinking that hyundai will try to avoid the tranny problem by putting the fault on the clutch and the drivers,,,,,,but thats my opinion what you guys think about that

I've found that the more miles I put on my car, the easier the 1st & 2nd gear engagement becomes, I'm still running the crappy stock fluid, shifter & bushings BTW.

I came across a MotorTrend piece on the GenCoupe while sitting on the throne today and even they said the manual had issues, they were pretty nonspecific IMO but something like rubbery shifter, blah blah, and they recommended the slushbox for the higher rear gear and quicker times. Too bad its a $1500 option.

To update on my tranny, I still find it warmed up to be a non-issue driveability wise, but while cold it still won't go into 1st at nothing but a dead stop. 2d has been pretty notchy while cold, too. I'm experimenting with flogging the gears rapidly 1-6 and back again before I back out of the driveway but so far that's been worthless.

That Motor Trend only mentioned to get the slushbox for "quicker times" because it was run on the GC before they got the red line RPM hang and near redline shift power cut issues fixed in the latest ECU update. The RPM hang issue in particular could have made the shifting much worse than it would otherwise be. A lot of these reviews on the GC were all done around the same 1-2 month period right after they came out and none of them have done any followups now that some of the teething issues have been fixed. The rubbery feel is something else, but if anything, it's a notchy setup, not a rubbery one. At least with mine anyway...but it's a later build.

Want to get rid of rubbery feel? Purchase TiC front shifter bushings for $30, then take about 30 mins to install them.....afterwards smile for the rest of the time you are in the car.

:groupbow: better investment than tuning, brakes, suspension or anything else IMO I can't believe I let them sit in a box since I've had the car. Had I any idea that they would make that big a difference, they would have been my 1st mod. Hell I can downshift into 2nd at almost 50mph & 1st at about 25mph on stock fluid.

tranny and now clutch

you know i talked to you guys a couple of weeks ago in the same place about probably a clutch problem well its starting to appear now i get some slippage on 6th gear when i floor it (poweraxel reflash on ) but since i have background on that my dealer told me they were going to change it even if i have reflash (they now about the reflash) but i really think with the rev hang issue at the beginning and all those tranny problem that this is just the logical next step and hope it will be the last chapter of that tranny

That is awesome to see that the dealer is still going to replace the cltuch. I dont understand it from Hyundais point because you are runing at least 60 more tq to the wheels (way above factory spec). Now my other ? is because I am getting a track 2.0t in 2 weeks. Did you drop the clutch alot? Any other mods etc? I was really hopeing to keep the factory clutch for 30k and wanted to keep the flywheel the life of the car. I dont abuse my cars at all and all I want to do is a power axel flash at 18psi.

Thanks for all the votes guys, the more information we have documented about the issue the better! After carefully scrutinizing my clutch and flywheel, since I have them out of the car, it appears that the dual mass flywheel could be the real problem here. I'll post a video later this week showing the actual issue I am seeing, but to put it in words, the top plate of the dual mass flywheel (the pressure surface the clutch plate makes contact with) is loose enough to rotate somewhere between 1/4" and 1/2" (haven't measured it yet). The bottom line here is that the clutch/flywheel interaction is being hampered by excessive flex within the dual mass construction of the flywheel. This is NOT good for syncos and I'm willing to bet that it is causing the issues people are having with their cars. Video to come shortly!

Sorry to hear that man! I was just saying that there where far less issues with the 6sp transmission in the tiburon then there have been with the Gen coupe. I was lucky on my tib with the clutch! Sold it with 59k on it and never had one problem.

Not a fan of SPEC clutches.......prefer Clutch Master or Excedy......
But, I will be running Exceladyne this time around, just sent my $1k down payment.

Anyone want to purchase a used stock clutch & flywheel for the low-low? pm me or I will post for sale in classifieds once removed & pics are taken.

BTW, replace shifter, front & rear shifter bushings, clutch, flywheel, M/T fluid >>> then this car will shift like it is supposed to.
I think the issues are more with the above list of items I'm replacing, rather than the internals of the tranny. just IMO.

Any new updates on this? This makes me actually want to consider the A/T. When are the 2011's coming out? Will they have the tranny issues fixed?
Well...from what I can tell, the grinding in higher gear issues have been resolved on the later production dates. As for the difficult engagement into lower gears, might be a little better on later production dates, but is still somewhat there.

This is particularly why I recommended my brother getting the A/T: its been around for a while & is proven, plus there is no maintainance. But, my car is more fun to drive than his IMO, even though his has more power. :jump:

The front TiC bushing replacement made a huge difference on mine shifting down into lower gears & I'm hoping the rear bushings (when available) will have just as much of an impact. Sad to say changing the fluiid to RedLine MTL did not help at all & seems just a little worse since the switch.
